304 vs 316 Stainless Steel: Which Grade for Your Cabinets?

Both are food-safe and rust-resistant — but they are not interchangeable. A clear guide to choosing the right grade for indoor, coastal, and outdoor cabinetry.

304 vs 316 Stainless Steel: Which Grade for Your Cabinets?

When people say “stainless steel,” they are usually talking about one of two grades: 304 or 316. Both belong to the austenitic family, both are food-safe, and both resist rust far better than ordinary steel. For most kitchen cabinetry, the difference is invisible day to day — until the environment changes.

What 304 does well

304 is the workhorse of stainless steel. It contains roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which form a passive oxide layer that protects the surface from corrosion. For indoor kitchens, living-room cabinetry, and bedroom wardrobes, 304 is the right choice: hygienic, durable, easy to clean, and more cost-effective than 316.

It handles moisture, steam, food acids, and daily cleaning without trouble. In a normal home or commercial interior, a 304 cabinet will outlast the building it sits in.

Where 316 earns its premium

316 adds 2–3% molybdenum to the mix. That single change dramatically improves resistance to chlorides — the salts found in seawater, coastal air, and some cleaning chemicals. Chlorides are what cause pitting corrosion, the tiny rust spots that eventually appear on lesser steel near the coast.

  • Coastal and seaside properties, where salt air is constant
  • Outdoor kitchens exposed to weather and pool chemicals
  • High-humidity environments such as spas and wet rooms
  • Commercial settings with aggressive cleaning regimes

A simple rule: 304 for the inside, 316 when salt, weather, or chlorides enter the picture.

Making the choice

For the vast majority of indoor projects, 304 delivers everything you need at a better price. The moment a cabinet will live near the sea, outdoors, or in a chemically harsh space, 316 is the insurance worth paying for. At Zovia we build in both grades and will recommend the right one for your environment — tell us where the cabinet will live, and we will spec accordingly.
